1. Cardiorespiratory Fitness: This refers to the ability of the heart, lungs and circulatory system to supply oxygen to the muscles during physical activity.

2. Muscular Strength: This refers to the ability of the muscles to generate force and is typically measured by the amount of weight that can be lifted for a certain number of repetitions.

3. Muscular Endurance: This refers to the ability of the muscles to sustain repeated contractions over time such as performing multiple repetitions of a particular exercise.

4. Flexibility: This refers to the range of motion at a joint and the ability of the muscles and connective tissues to stretch without causing pain or injury.

5. Body Composition: This refers to the proportion of fat, muscle and other tissues in the body and is often used as an indicator of overall health and fitness.

Fitness is a multi-dimensional concept that encompasses various aspects of physical and mental well-being. Regular exercise, healthy eating habits and other lifestyle choices can help improve overall fitness and promote a healthier, more active lifestyle.

What does fitness mean in PE?

In physical education (PE), fitness refers to the overall state of physical health and ability to perform physical activities. In this context fitness includes a range of physical attributes such as cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition.
PE classes typically aim to promote physical fitness and encourage students to engage in regular physical activity through a variety of exercises and activities. Students may participate in activities that promote cardiovascular fitness such as running or playing sports as well as activities that promote muscular strength and endurance such as push-ups or weightlifting exercises.

The Three Levels of Fitness:


1. Basic or Health-related fitness
2. Intermediate or Skill-related fitness
3. Advanced or Performance-related fitness

It includes activities that promote cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition. The primary goal of basic or health-related fitness is to improve overall health, prevent chronic diseases and promote well-being.
Activities that promote basic fitness are,

  • Aerobic exercise like jogging, walking, cycling or swimming.
  • Resistance training with weights or bodyweight exercises.

Intermediate or Skill-related fitness: This level of fitness is focused on developing skills and abilities related to specific sports or physical activities.
